'The temple of groove'

Marula calls itself 'the temple of groove', and that's the best summary. It isn't a reggaeton club or a techno club: the music is funk, soul, afrobeat, R&B, Latin and world music, played by live bands early in the night and by DJs, often on vinyl, later on. It's a room on a narrow old-town street where the point is to dance, not to be seen. The crowd mixes locals, musicians who come for the jams and visitors who wander in from the streets around Plaça Reial.

What a week at Marula looks like

The week of 21 October 2026 is a good example. Wednesday had a 'World Groove Session' jam and then the Marula Club DJ night. Thursday is the weekly 'Hit Me Funk!' jam session at 22:30, followed by a DJ. Friday had a concert and then two DJs. Saturday 24 was the big one: a free boogaloo concert by Los Fulanos at 22:00 and, from midnight, the 17th anniversary party with the house DJs. Sunday closed the week with an Afro-Latin jam. Some nights there are special sessions too, like a disco night on Sunday 11 October from midnight. The pattern is clear: music first, then dancing.

How entry works

Entry at Marula depends on the event, and a lot of it is free if you come early. The Thursday jam is free from 22:30 to 23:00; the Los Fulanos concert on 24 October 2026 was free until the room was full; the special session of 11 October was free until 01:00. Other concerts have a ticket sold in advance. The club doesn't publish a general price list, so ask us on WhatsApp about the night you want and we'll tell you how it works.

Age and dress code

Marula doesn't publish an age rule or a dress code. Catalan law keeps under-16s out of clubs and music bars, except live shows with a parent or guardian (Decree 112/2010, art. 53), and each venue can set a higher age; for the late DJ sessions count on 18+ and bring ID. Dress is relaxed: comfortable shoes, because you'll be dancing.

Around Escudellers

Marula is one of the old-town music rooms that survived a tough 2026 for the area: Karma and Sidecar, both in Plaça Reial, closed this year. Jamboree, in the square, is the jazz-then-hip-hop option; Macarena, in the Gòtic, is the small electronic club; Colors, on La Rambla, the commercial one. Marula is the one for groove.

Getting home

From Escudellers it's a walk up La Rambla to Plaça de Catalunya, where almost every NitBus line stops; night buses run every 20 minutes from 22:30 to 06:00. The metro runs all night on Saturdays and until 2am on Fridays, and closes around midnight on other nights (AMB, TMB).

Who it's for

Marula suits people who dance to funk, soul and Afro-Latin music, musicians who want a jam, and visitors who'd rather see a band up close than queue for a big club. Come early on Thursdays for the free jam, or on a Saturday for the concert and stay for the DJs.
