Getting Home After a Night Out in Barcelona: Metro, NitBus and Special Nights

· Updated:

Barcelona's Metro runs all night on Saturdays and until 02:00 on Fridays and nights before holidays; from Sunday to Thursday it stops at midnight, and the NitBus night buses run from 22:30 to 06:00 every 20 minutes, almost all through Plaça de Catalunya, according to TMB and the AMB in October 2026.

The key to getting home is matching the day with the closing time. Clubs in Catalonia can stay open until 05:00, or 06:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays, and they have 30 minutes to empty the room after closing (45 in venues for more than 500 people). The Metro reopens at 05:00 on weekdays and never stops on Saturday nights. So the tricky window is between midnight, or 02:00 on a Friday, and 05:00: that's NitBus or taxi time.

Quick answer: the Metro, day by day

One detail that catches people out: TMB gives the time the last train leaves the end of the line, not the time it passes your station. At a station in the middle of the line the last train passes later, but if you arrive at 02:00 on the dot on a Friday you may already have missed it.

The NitBus: night buses every 20 minutes

The NitBus is the night bus network of Barcelona and its metropolitan area. It runs every day of the year from 22:30 to 06:00, with a bus every 20 minutes. Since 30 April 2025 there are 23 lines, after the AMB added the N23 and N24. All lines except the N0 and the N19 pass through Plaça de Catalunya, which works as the night interchange: if you don't know which line takes you home, get there and change. For nightlife, the N24 matters most: it runs from Roquetes and Canyelles through Gràcia and Plaça de Catalunya to the Barceloneta and the Moll Oriental, by the W hotel. The N16, N17 and N18 go to the airport, and the N16 also reaches Castelldefels.

The seafront is the area most people ask about. The four Port Olímpic clubs are a walk from Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica on the L4, which is perfect on a Saturday because the Metro runs all night. On a Thursday or a Sunday, when the clubs close at 05:00 and the Metro reopens at that very time, the first trains are your best option. The Poble Espanyol is up the hill from Plaça d'Espanya: give yourself time to walk down.

Special nights: Sant Joan, La Mercè and New Year's Eve

Three nights a year the Metro doesn't close, whatever the day of the week: 23 June, the night of Sant Joan, 23 September, the eve of La Mercè, and 31 December. On those nights other services change too. For Sant Joan 2026, FGC ran until 02:00 and Rodalies added trains on the R1 and R2 Sud. On New Year's Eve 2025, several FGC lines ran all night. Rodalies has no regular night service, so outside those dates the train isn't an option for getting home late. On Christmas Eve it works the other way: the Metro closes early, at 23:00.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps work all night in Barcelona, and at closing time the queues at the busiest exits, like the seafront, can be long. We don't quote fares because we haven't found a current fare table from the city or the AMB to cite, and night supplements change. Two practical tips: walk a couple of streets away from the club exit before calling a car, and if it's Saturday, compare with the Metro, which is running.

Before you go out: a quick checklist

  • Check the day: Saturday is the only regular night with Metro all night; Friday ends at 02:00, the rest at midnight.
  • Find your NitBus line before you leave home, and remember that Plaça de Catalunya is the place to change.
  • If the club closes at 05:00, the first Metro trains leave at that time from Monday to Friday mornings.
  • Allow for the queue at the exit: clubs have 30 minutes to empty after closing, 45 in the big ones.
  • Keep some phone battery for the bus app or a taxi, and agree on a meeting point with your group.
  • Going to Castelldefels or the airport area? Note the N16, and check the AMB timetable for the last stretch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Barcelona Metro run all night?

Only on Saturday nights, plus three special dates: 23 June (Sant Joan), 23 September (La Mercè) and 31 December. On Fridays and nights before holidays it runs until 02:00, and from Sunday to Thursday until midnight (TMB).

Until what time does the Metro run on Fridays?

Until 02:00. TMB gives the time the last train leaves the end of the line, so at a station in the middle the last train passes a little later; don't count on catching it at exactly 02:00.

What is the NitBus?

Barcelona's night bus network, run with the AMB: 23 lines from 22:30 to 06:00 every day of the year, every 20 minutes. All lines except the N0 and the N19 pass through Plaça de Catalunya, where you can change.

How do I get back from the Port OlĂmpic?

On Saturday night, by Metro: Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica, on the L4, is the station for the seafront clubs, and the Metro runs all night. On other nights, the N24 NitBus links the Barceloneta and the W hotel with Plaça de Catalunya and Gràcia.

Is there Metro on New Year's Eve?

Yes, all night on 31 December, according to TMB. On Christmas Eve, 24 December, it closes earlier, at 23:00.
